Pollution prompts Bangkok to close schools for the week

Authorities in Thailand have ordered the closure of schools in Bangkok for the rest of the week after air pollution worsened.

The city's education ministry said the situation will be reviewed over the weekend to decide whether it would be extended.

Residents have been spotted wearing masks as thick smog blanketed the city, with the air quality index (AQI) monitor pegging Bangkok at the “unhealthy” level of 171.

People are being urged not to burn incense sticks and paper during Chinese new year celebrations.
