Check-ups urged after 2.5 kg tumour removed from UAE patient's breast

Medical experts say women should have regular breast examinations after a patient in Abu Dhabi underwent an operation to remove a tumour weighing two and a half kilogrammes.

A surgical team at Tawam Hospital, an Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, performed the tumorectomy on the woman who had breast cancer.

The tumour measured 20 centimetres in diameter.

The 44-year-old patient did not have a history of any other illnesses and led a healthy lifestyle.

Although she had sensed the presence of a tumour several months ago, she had been hesitant to undergo an examination at the hospital.

Dr Moza Al Ameri, Consultant Breast Surgeon, led the team who performed the procedure and urged all women to screen any lumps found on their breasts, especially if a tumour is suspected of being malignant or when symptoms related to breast cancer start to appear.

Dr Al Ameri reassured the community that medical treatment of the disease was readily available, and encouraged women to conduct examinations.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Health and Prevention announced the launch of its annual breast cancer awareness campaign to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Ministry underscored the precautionary measures against the spread of the COVID-19 virus that have been implemented at the screening centres.

These include an on-phone booking service, with 24-hour in-advance confirmation of the appointment to avoid overcrowding, and temperature checks prior to the test.

Women have also been advised that they can visit the centres without an escort.

In addition, mammogram results can be provided over the phone or by email, without the need to visit again in-person and the equipment at the facilities is being sterilized after each examination.

The Ministry highlighted the key causes of the disease and the importance of early detection, as well as ways to educate women on conducting self-examinations.

Early screening can increase chances of survival by 95 per cent.
