DEWA completes pilot project for virtual power station

DEWA

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has completed its pilot project for its virtual power station, a smart grid and digital platform, the first of its kind in the region, that ensures communication between multiple small and medium-sized distributed energy sources.

The new virtual power station includes ensuring communication between photovoltaic solar systems, battery storage systems, electric vehicle charging stations, and other flexible loads, with the aim of enabling the sharing of these sources to support grid operations and maximize their benefits.

Through the virtual power station, DEWA can aggregate and integrate the distributed energy sources of the electric vehicle charging stations at its R&D Centre with a total consumption of 132 kilowatts. The station provides total flexibility of up to about 3.3 MW.

DEWA’s R&D Centre implemented the station, connected it to assets, and managed the various sources as if it were a single conventional power station to produce power and loads connected to the grid.
