In a world first, the UAE Council for Fatwa is set to use AI-powered drones to sight the crescent moon, marking the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
This innovative method will work alongside traditional naked-eye sightings and advanced astronomical observatories across the country, ensuring accuracy in the moon sighting.
The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with national institutions, research centres, and observatories to enhance the reliability of the crescent moon confirmation.
The drones will complement traditional methods of crescent sighting, which follow Prophet Muhammed’s (peace be upon him) saying, "Do not fast unless you see the crescent (of Ramadan), and do not give up fasting till you see the crescent (of Shawwal), but if the sky is overcast, then act on estimation."
