In a major development for clean energy, Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), have announced the launch of the world’s first large-scale, round-the-clock gigascale project in Abu Dhabi.

This groundbreaking project combines solar power with battery storage, and aims to provide uninterrupted renewable energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The announcement was made by Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Minister of Investment and CEO of ADQ, during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

This milestone is seen as a major step in the global clean energy transition, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a leader in renewable energy innovation.

The project, which will deliver up to 1 gigawatt of baseload power daily, features a massive 5.2 gigawatt solar photovoltaic plant paired with a 19 gigawatt-hour battery storage system, making it the largest combined solar and battery energy storage system in the world.

Dr. Al Jaber emphasized the importance of overcoming the challenge of intermittency in renewable energy, noting that this project provides a solution to ensure continuous, clean power generation.

The initiative is expected to create over 10,000 new jobs and foster economic growth, while providing a global benchmark for technological innovation in energy storage and solar power.

The facility will also enhance grid stability and efficiency, solving the intermittency challenges that have long limited renewable energy deployment.
